12 – 19 October 2024 at Haus Schwärzetal, Eberswalde
For months, the programme advisory board’s projectors and screens have been running hot to let us view the submissions, a total of 600 from 67 countries. Fourteen people saw and discussed them all and carefully compiled a selection of 35 to appear on the festival programme – eight long documentaries, short documentaries and animated films each and eleven short feature films. They come from 20 countries, including Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Syria, Mexico, France, Colombia, Italy, Austria, Canada, Slovenia, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Estonia, Denmark and Iran. Our programme for the 21st Provinziale promises to be exciting, to feature much of the world, seen from unusual perspectives and presented with fresh cineastic spirit.
There will be one novelty in 2024: on Sunday, 13 October, Provinziale takes a step sidewards and abandons its usual schedule for a special regional programme.
- Festival Sunday starts with an afternoon of youth cinema. Supported by the East German Sparkasse Foundation and Sparkasse Barnim, SEHquenz e.V. shows selected works from the FILMKNACK youth cinema project and by other young filmmakers based in the state of Brandenburg.
- Up next, there will be a premiere: the most recent episode of the ‘Polizeiruf 110’ detective series, which is set and was shot in and around Eberswalde, will be shown on Provinziale’s big screen before its regular TV broadcast.
- We finish the day with a screening of the documentary Tell Them About Us, which is also set in Eberswalde and is just about to start its tour of the cinemas. The film shows young women and girls from Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan, their stories and dreams and how they hit reality.
Our various prize donors have kept supporting us this year. The long documentary competition award will be funded by the Brandenburg State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labour and Energy. The short documentary competition award is donated by the municipality of Eberswalde, the short feature film award was made possible by Sparkasse Barnim, the animated film award is supported by the WHG Eberswalde building and housing company and the STACHEL jury award is donated by Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and the Kreiswerke Barnim utility company in equal shares. Our circle of sponsors and supporters has always been diverse. Besides the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg funding organisation, we could always rely on support from the District of Barnim and many local businesses, such as Autohaus an der Wilhelmsbrücke and Bäckerei Wiese.
The 2024 Provinziale will take place in and around Haus Schwärzetal in Eberswalde again.
We start off on 12 October. Save the date!
