Michael Cusack has been an animator for over 45 years and in that time has produced many award-winning stop-motion short films. The poignantly beautiful "Better Angels" is his latest film. He was recently honoured with a major retrospective of his work at the Melbourne International Animation Film Festival.

Calvin Antoine Blandin directs animated films. He took a Bachelor of Science degree in Caen, moved to Paris and then to Angoulême in 2008 to study at EMCA Animation School. In his films, he questions our relationship with reality and seeks to emphasize its porosity by exploring the proximity between emotion and perception.

Dreaming up a world to your liking: In the hot summer of Emmen, a desolate industrial suburb of Lucerne in Switzerland, someone is looking for relaxation and a cool place. An unexpected transformation is going to take place between asphalt, concrete and a military airfield.

Anja Sidler, Andrea Schneider and Delia Hess are Papierboot, an animation collective from Lucerne (Switzerland). With a lot of enthusiasm they create commissioned works as well as their own short film projects. "Emmen am See" is their first joint festival contribution.

A frog with bad memories of a surveillance state comes into a rabbit class and – surprise – appears different, ridiculous and awkward. He slips away into the more beautiful world of his dreams. But then he makes friends and can even help the duck, who one day arrives equally lost at the school gates. Alienness and acceptance, loneliness and friendship are the themes of this film.

Eric Montchaud studied at La Poudriere Animation Film School. His first film, "The Smell of Wet Dog", was self-produced. He has worked as an animator for TV series and short films and animated some scenes for the films "The Science of Sleep" and "Mood Indigo" by Michel Gondry.

A little girl with a dog observes what is going on in the mortuary house. Everything seems mysterious, depressing and threatening. Death is inconceivable, dark and incomprehensible, as are the actions of the mourners. Or is it the dead themselves walking around? Then everything starts to dissolve. The girl can only look, the dog only bark.

Pablo Polledri is a prolific filmmaker who has created a multitude of animation pieces, always working independently. Considered one of the most outstanding animators of Argentina, he looks back at an extensive filmography as well as a multitude of commercial works for international brands.

A Ukrainian folk tune set to animation. Two hundred years ago, a young Cossack goes to war, leaving his wife and mother alone on the farm. On his return, he faces betrayal and loss. Nothing is as it used to be.

Born in 1992, Anna Shveigolz graduated from college with a ceramicist diploma and three sculptures of melancholic trees as tall as herself. She then joined Anton Olshvang's workshop. Meeting the maitre was a turning point, and animation became her life’s ambition. In 2017 she entered SHAR Studio School Moscow, where she later worked on the film "The Nose, Or the Conspiracy of Mavericks".

On 4th August 1944, almost the entire population of the small Estonian island of Ruhnu fled the war. Decades later, they finally get the opportunity to visit their former home. But many things are no longer what they used to be.

Ülo Pikkov was born in Estonia in 1976. He studied at Turku School of Art and Media in Finland, took a degree in law at University of Tartu in 2005 and is currently enrolled at Estonian Academy of Arts. His first stop-motion animated film, "Body Memory", was created in 2011. He explored the technique in several other films before turning to sand animation for "Till We Meet Again".

There are plenty of mermaids in the sea. They lead seafarers astray or fall in love with princes and then become foam on the crest of a wave. This one is different. She has chunky feet that don't seem to match the chunky hands of the fisherman who caught her, and she frees her fish friends from his nets. So he throws her back into the water, even though he has fallen in love. But there is a happy ending.

Anna-Maria Chernigovskaya was born Anna-Maria Viktorovna in Moscow in 1995. She studied Animated Film Direction at St. Petersburg State University of Film and Television and at SHAR Studio School. Her first film was "Would Like to Sleep" in 2016.
